HISTORY
The Library and Information Science (LIS) programme at Delta State University, Abraka, was established in 1992 following the creation of Delta State in 1991. Initially, it operated as a diploma program under the Institute of Education. Due to university policy, the LIS degree programme later became a unit within the Department of Social Science Education, offering a Bachelor of Library Science Education (BLS.Ed) degree.
In the 1998/1999 academic session, the programme moved to the Faculty of Social Sciences and was renamed B.Sc. Library and Information Science. In 2008, after an accreditation visit by the National Universities Commission (NUC), the programme returned to the Faculty of Education as a department and was renamed Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS). In 2022, the NUC introduced the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standard (CCMAS), prompting the relocation of the LIS programme to the Faculty of Social Sciences in January 2024 for the 2023/2024 academic session.
